{"id":7511,"date":"2021-04-12T13:19:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T13:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.homelessvoice.org\/?p=7511"},"modified":"2021-04-12T13:19:06","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T13:19:06","slug":"the-worsening-challenges-of-homeless-lgbt-youth-in-a-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beta.homelessvoice.org\/?p=7511","title":{"rendered":"The Worsening Challenges of Homeless LGBT Youth in a Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Disproportionately representing homeless youth, depressed and anxious, suicidal and unhoused: homeless LGBT youth now face even more challenges due to COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h6>By Andrew Fraieli<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI locked myself in a public bathroom so I had a place to sleep.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the start of becoming homeless for Reginald Collins, 23, who has been homeless \u201con and off\u201d since 18. Collins, who is Black, is also gender fluid and prefers both feminine and masculine pronouns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt all started when I was 17. My dad kicked me out because I had a few male friends over,\u201d he said. \u201cIt went from being a great experience to police getting involved, and child services. I ended up in foster care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins has stayed at five different shelters as he\u2019s been homeless, not all LGBT-friendly, as well as couchsurfed with what he considered friends at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy father was Southern Baptist, so very anti-LGBT+, very old-school. He grew up in the \u201860s, very different from the generation of today,\u201d he elaborated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins faced racism, mental health struggles, and intolerance to his gender fluidity during his stays at various shelters. And he is not alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disproportionately harassed and sexually assaulted; depressed and anxious; suicidal and unhoused; LGBT youth face challenges everyday that homelessness exaggerates and the pandemic has exacerbated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c28% of LGBTQ youth who experienced housing instability reported a suicide attempt in the past year,\u201d according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-Trevor-Project-National-Survey-Results-2020.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 report by the Trevor Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit organization focused on suicide prevention among the LGBTQ community. This jumped to 34% for specifically transgender and non-binary homeless youth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this was the reality before COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-pandemic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% of all LGBT youth, generally defined as ages 13 to 24, experienced homelessness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 disproportionately representing homeless youth in general, being<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/voicesofyouthcount.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/VoYC-LGBTQ-Brief-Chapin-Hall-2018.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2.2 times more likely to be homeless<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their non-LGBT peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On an average day, 27% of homeless LGBTQ youth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/voicesofyouthcount.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/VoYC-LGBTQ-Brief-Chapin-Hall-2018.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported exchanging sex for \u201cbasic needs,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 38% reporting they had been forced to have sex. On a normal, non-pandemic night, LGBT youth faced violence due to their gender or sexuality, and harassment \u2014 in school, by their family, and on the streets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These disparaged LGBT youth heavily depend on LGBT community centers and shelters for finding housing, as well as finding jobs, mental health counseling, food, showering, and social support. But the pandemic has challenged shelter\u2019s and community center\u2019s ability to supply these essential services, and youth\u2019s ability to receive them.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Already, the pandemic has directly caused more LGBT youth to become homeless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>COVID-19 Sending More LGBT Youth to the Street<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the parks closed, and the hotels closed, we saw a drastic increase in homelessness, oftentimes it\u2019s just them not able to afford rent and getting kicked out of their current situations,\u201d says Heather Wilkie \u2014 CEO of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zebrayouth.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zebra Coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Orlando, one of about 15 or so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtcenters.org\/LGBTCenters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBT-focused community centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Florida. Wilkie says they see many youth working in tourism and hospitality, and Orlando was already in the midst of a housing crisis when the pandemic started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins was one of those youth, losing his job at a Holiday Inn resort in mid-March. He thought he\u2019d lose his hours for a few days, but it \u201cwent from being a few days to a few weeks to months.\u201d Eventually he said they laid him and others off so the employees could apply for unemployment benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In comparison to losing housing, Victor Diaz-Herman \u2014 CEO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pridelines.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pridelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an LGBT community center in Miami \u2014 has seen some youth running away from home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause it\u2019s unsafe, or they\u2019d rather be on the streets than living their lives not acknowledging who they truly are, or their parents not wanting to acknowledge who they truly are\u2026,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main challenge he\u2019s seen is finding housing during the pandemic due to limited beds in general \u2014 rather than more LGBT youth becoming homeless. Second to that is finding shelters \u201cthat are safe and affirming for our queer youth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic is now adding on to this series of challenges with COVID test requirements and self-quarantining, both of which can be complicated for a homeless youth Diaz-Herman explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Zebra Coalition has 11 beds of their own for youth coming in, and 36 units in a rapid-rehousing program funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Development (HUD). The rapid-rehousing is a rent-subsidy program, so youth do not have to pay. Even so, Wilkie says the Zebra Coalition has faced a similar restriction issue with housing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith the rapid rehousing program we\u2019re working with landlords, so we\u2019re at their mercy as to what guidelines they have established because of the pandemic,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>More Restrictions Means Less Help and Longer Waits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sobourney Burnes \u2014 director of the Youth Program at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunserve.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SunServe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit LGBT community center in Fort Lauderdale \u2014 has found similarly to Diaz-Herman that the \u201cdifficulty of getting [LGBT youth] housing has increased.\u201d She\u2019s also had difficulties with restrictions implemented at shelters, calling them too restrictive even with safety concerns taken into consideration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not fair to someone with a job,\u201d Barnes explains. An example she gives is a client she\u2019s been working with for a couple months who hasn\u2019t been able to stay in a shelter due to working later than the shelter\u2019s curfew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three of these LGBT community centers have had to limit in-person interactions and heighten safety restrictions due to the pandemic, but Burnes says they\u2019ve curbed their ability to help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe used to be able to go out,\u201d she says. \u201cI could put a kid in my car and drive them to a job, but now with the restrictions I can\u2019t at all.\u201d To Burnes, this forced \u201cless of the hands-on-ness that we\u2019re known for.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essential services from LGBT community centers like food, laundry, and mental health counseling haven\u2019t ceased though, in Florida or otherwise. According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtcenters.org\/Assets\/Images\/PageContent\/Full\/lgbtq-centers-report-2020.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, during the pandemic some of those needs have increased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany centers have expanded their basic needs programming, such as food pantries and providing direct cash assistance to community members,\u201d states the report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtcenters.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centerlink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit coalition of LGBT community centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em><strong>\u201cPeople don\u2019t understand, when you\u2019re homeless you go through a lot to get back on your feet, it\u2019s not easy. You don\u2019t have a place, you don\u2019t have WiFi. If you don\u2019t have a working phone than that\u2019s even worse because now, with COVID, everything is online,\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diaz-Herman elaborates that these in-person restrictions have harmed homeless youth, they can no longer \u201cspend time inside, while using the services, or even having a rest from the day to day challenges they face, including access to peers and support services from the shelter,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Pridelines continues to offer these essential services.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[We] still offer our wrap around services, our support groups are virtual,\u201d Diaz-Herman said. \u201cWe still have our showers available by appointment, laundry service available by appointment, snacks and meal support \u2014 all of that still exists\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the Zebra Coalition has even been able to have some walk-in hours stay available during the week. Though Wilkie says, \u201cthere haven\u2019t been a lot of youth dropping by, so even though we follow CDC guidelines, they\u2019re still hesitant to come in person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Pandemic is Bringing Mental Health Even Lower<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 restrictions have caused queer youth to have even less access to safe spaces like LGBT community centers and schools which, normally, are heavily used for their community, support groups, and in-person mental health services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By July of last year, 94% of participating centers offered online programs. That\u2019s up from 21% in early 2020 according to Centerlink\u2019s report, but the participation of these online services is varied. Going online isn\u2019t as easy as it sounds for homeless youth, who may not have readily available access to the internet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t understand, when you\u2019re homeless you go through a lot to get back on your feet, it\u2019s not easy. You don\u2019t have a place, you don&#8217;t have WiFi. If you don\u2019t have a working phone than that\u2019s even worse because now, with COVID, everything is online,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who\u2019s been staying at the Zebra Coalition since he was 19. During the pandemic he\u2019s has been able to access services in person there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re experiencing homelessness you aren\u2019t prioritizing sitting at a McDonalds or a Starbucks using their free WiFi to participate in a [support] group in front of strangers,\u201d says Diaz-Herman, referencing their online group services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pridelines, he says, has seen a drop in participants since switching to online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are now having to access these groups, more often than not, from their homes where they may not be out, or where it may not be safe to be themselves,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He sees the shift from a safe place as the main issue, \u201cbecause now it\u2019s no longer in this space that we create, but the space they have available to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilkie described seeing a similar issue where LGBT youth \u201cmay be in situations where their families might not be supportive, so that\u2019s further isolating. And all of those things, definitely have expanded.\u201d Wilkie also said they\u2019ve hired more workers for their online mental health services to be able to reach out to even more youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School closures could also contribute to LGBT youth\u2019s isolation according to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/2020\/04\/03\/implications-of-covid-19-for-lgbtq-youth-mental-health-and-suicide-prevention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April report on COVID-19\u2019s possible mental health effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Trevor Project. The reports states LGBT youth \u201cmay lose access to positive connections,\u201d like extracurricular activities, positive social interactions, and Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGSAs provide LGBTQ youth and allies with safe environments where they can feel empowered, socialize, and receive support, and the presence of GSAs has been found to significantly reduce the risk for depression and increase well-being among LGBTQ youth and young adults,\u201d according to the report.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the same queer youth whom half have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/files\/assets\/resources\/Growing-Up-LGBT-in-America_Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verbally harassed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in school and are twice as likely to be physically assaulted there than their peers. For those without a home though, school could be the only source of \u201cpositive connections\u201d outside of community centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrc-prod-requests.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/files\/assets\/resources\/COVID19-IssueBrief-032020-FINAL.pdf?mtime=20200811115717&amp;focal=none\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans Rights Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took note of the higher rates of homelessness among LGBT youth in a recent report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany LGBTQ youth may heavily rely on food and resources provided by public schools and child welfare agencies. Due to widespread school closures as a result of COVID-19, LGBTQ youth are at risk of accessing basic needs provided by schools,\u201d the report states. \u201cThey may also be required to spend more time in unsupportive environments \u2014 including home environments where they face family rejection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, The Trevor Project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Trevor-Poll_COVID19.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published their first report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that polled both LGBT and straight cisgender youth on their mental health specifically during the pandemic. It found higher rates of stress, symptoms of depression, and that general lack of access to mental health care had increased in the LGBT youth, with the possibility of homelessness contributing to these rates worsening.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em><strong>When the parks closed, and the hotels closed, we saw a drastic increase in homelessness, oftentimes it\u2019s just them not able to afford rent and getting kicked out of their current situations,<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cForty-one percent of LGBTQ youth stated that COVID-19 impacted their ability to express their LGBTQ identity, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth (56%),\u201d the report states. This is also seen in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2020\/?section=Housing-Instability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Project report from earlier in the year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stating that 50% of transgender and nonbinary youth were kicked out of their homes, and 56% ran away due to their LGBTQ identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLGBTQ youth who experienced housing instability were twice as likely to report seriously considering suicide and three times as likely to report attempting suicide compared to LGBTQ youth who had not,\u201d according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2020\/?section=Housing-Instability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 version of the same yearly report.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trevor project also told the Homeless Voice that, \u201cSince the onset of COVID-19, the volume of youth reaching out to The Trevor Project\u2019s crisis services for support has increased significantly \u2014 at times double our pre-COVID volume.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins has felt this stress from the pandemic, saying that his mental health was affected \u201cwhen the pandemic first started because I lost my job. I got laid off because of this thing. I wasn\u2019t making money for almost five months basically.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He calls himself a social butterfly, so the lack of \u201cgoing out, being with friends, doing what young people do: clubbing, going to restaurants, theme parks\u201d has affected him a lot. He also hasn\u2019t been able to see his partner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mental health of LGBT youth has already been the subject of many previous reports before. They show higher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrc-prod-requests.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/ProjectThrive-YRBSData-Statement-100920.pdf?mtime=20201009165824&amp;focal=none\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rates of depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/files\/assets\/resources\/2018-YouthReport-NoVid.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/142\/4\/e20174218\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicidal <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoughts and attempts compared to non-LGBT youth, as well as higher rates of homelessness. Mental health issues are even more prevalent among those who are both LGBT and unhoused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Helping LGBT Teens will Help All Teens<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health is still a problem for cisgender youth though. The Trevor Project has shown that 23% of cisgender youth who \u201cexperienced housing instability\u201d attempted suicide as well. The issue for LGBT youth is how disproportionately represented they are. 29% of all homeless youth identify as LGBT, and 28% of those youth have attempted suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReally we\u2019re talking LGBT youth because they are so much of the homeless youth,\u201d says Dylan Waguespack, the Public Policy and External Affairs director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truecolorsunited.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True Colors United<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit that pushes for policy changes to support homeless LGBT youth. Waguespack points out that anything that works for LGBT youth will work for others; it\u2019s a matter of inclusion in consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey have to think \u2018will I be safe here sleeping, I can\u2019t come out, I can\u2019t say this is who I am, someone is going to hurt me\u2019,\u201d says Burnes \u2014 non-LGBT youth do not. In one shelter, she says \u201cthere was a lot of LGBT incompetency,\u201d and the common situation of a trans youth being put on a side of the shelter that doesn\u2019t match their gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI went to a Christian shelter and that was one of the worst experiences I ever had,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely one of those full-time Christian places. Me being Black, the power of them being a bunch of caucasian people, there was some little racism going on. At the time, I was just going to school, trying to live my day-to-day life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins is also familiar with the shelter Barnes was referring to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[T]hat was another Christian faith shelter, but they did understand they had a LGBT population. So they were more tolerant \u2014 I should say, \u2018tolerant,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cShelters like that need to educate themselves on modern day society, you know, asking pronouns, knowing how to identify gender, becoming more open to LGBTQ youth. Have to be more patient\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em><strong>It\u2019s always been true that housing is the solution, There\u2019s no reason to be spending tax dollars to keep warehousing young people.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo be fair, congregate shelters haven\u2019t always been the greatest option,\u201d Waguespack notes. LGBT youth end up there \u201cknowing they are less safe in congregate housing: mentally, physically, or otherwise.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of True Colors United\u2019s \u201cfocus is on trying to help spur congressional action,\u201d Waguespack says. Right now \u201cthere isn\u2019t much to be done except crisis management,\u201d and making sure young people are included in emergency situations and spending decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diaz-Herman points to the need for more training for staff at shelters and to have the conversations about how to make LGBT youth feel safe, even with other non-LGBT clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo when you come into that space, if you\u2019re a straight ally, you are coming in knowing that this space is safe, it\u2019s affirming, but knowing it\u2019s first and foremost going to ensure that our LGBTQ community members are the ones that feel that,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/truecolorsunited.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Serving-Our-Youth-June-2015.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from True Colors United highlights the possible lack of training showing that 22.7% of shelters said \u201cthey did not have dedicated LGBTQ staff and did not need one.\u201d 30.3% reported they didn\u2019t have a dedicated staff member but it would be helpful, with the main reason of going without being funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funding is always a problem, but going further, how the dollars are spent is an issue as well. Waguespack hopes more money is used for better conceptual solutions, like housing support, rather than furthering shelter capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s always been true that housing is the solution,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to be spending tax dollars to keep warehousing young people.\u201d And, he continues, along with that idea, \u201cnone of these things will be less important months from now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilkie agrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoung people aren\u2019t going to suddenly have housing in three months. It\u2019s a long-term issue, they\u2019re spot on,\u201d she said. \u201cI was very fortunate we got that long-term money [the HUD grant] because a young person could stay in that housing program for up to two years \u2014 that\u2019s the type of assistance that we need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBT youth already disproportionately suffer from mental health issues, higher rates of homelessness, and lack of access to help, with the pandemic taking more of these skeletal support systems and scarce resources away from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diaz-Herman hopes, though, that more funding will come from this dire situation to help LGBTQ youth in the long-term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot to provide more beds in existing shelters,\u201d he said. \u201cBut to develop specific housing opportunities and programs that are targeted, that is focused on a [Continuum of Care]. Not just to house you, or find you a temporary apartment that you can eventually transition to, but to give you opportunity to pick up a skill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelter is one step in a more long-term solution the way Diaz-Herman describes it. These LGBT youth need housing, but they also need life skills to truly succeed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cFinancial literacy, professional development, support with mental health \u2014 well, health and mental health quite frankly \u2014 that would be focused on providing these young people with the resources to become self-sufficient,\u201d he explains. \u201cSo, when they either age-out or term-out of these programs, they have the ability to thrive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins is a perfect example of what more long-term services can do. He\u2019s stayed with the Zebra Coalition, a place he calls \u201cvery pro-LGBT,\u201d three times since he was 19, but sees this as the last time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t plan on coming back, because I\u2019ll have my life together,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019ll be starting a job soon as an assistant administrator at Aspire Health Partners, a Florida behavioral healthcare non-profit, helping HIV affected men and women find housing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be doing pretty much what my life has been about,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll put it back into the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without the Zebra Coalition \u2014 where he\u2019s stayed since the pandemic started in January 2020 \u2014 Collins paints a grim picture of what his life may have been like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d probably be dead somewhere,\u201d he said. \u201cI would have either died from starving, or dehydration, or I would have gotten so depressed at the situation because I had no help, nowhere to go\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when it\u2019s all over, \u201cI expect life to be better. I expect to travel.
