{"id":6581,"date":"2021-04-19T13:50:01","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T13:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.homelessvoice.org\/?p=6581"},"modified":"2021-04-19T17:58:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T17:58:35","slug":"homeless-able-to-receive-stimulus-checks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beta.homelessvoice.org\/?p=6581","title":{"rendered":"How to Receive a Stimulus Check Without Home Address or Bank Account"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Those experiencing homelessness are eligible to receive stimulus money and tax benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<h6><em>By Andrew Fraieli<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those experiencing homelessness are still able to receive their stimulus checks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/those-experiencing-homelessness-can-get-economic-impact-payments-and-other-tax-benefits-permanent-address-not-required\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal Revenue Service (IRS) published a press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Thursday reiterating details on how Americans without a home address, and without a bank account, may still receive their current and previously unclaimed stimulus checks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the agency, they will issue a check even to those who do not normally file a tax return \u2014 anyone who has a social security number and is not a claimed dependent can receive one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do so, a \u201cbasic 2020 tax return\u201d must be filed with the IRS, and once processed, they will send a check to the address given. They specify that anyone experiencing homelessness \u201cmay list the address of a friend, relative or trusted service provider, such as a shelter, drop-in day center or transitional housing program, on the return filed with the IRS. People do not need a permanent address or a bank account. They don\u2019t need to have a job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone is experiencing homelessness but also working, the IRS says they may qualify for an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This is a tax break for low-income workers, but even those earning less than required to file taxes may qualify. The online <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/individuals\/earned-income-tax-credit\/use-the-eitc-assistant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EITC assistant tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can judge eligibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help for filing taxes could also be available to those filing a tax return so as to receive a stimulus check, or if qualified for EITC. The IRS says the nearest location can be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/free-tax-return-preparation-for-qualifying-taxpayers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or by calling 800-906-9887.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They continue that the 2020 tax return can be filed easiest by using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/app\/freeFile\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRS Free File<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tool that allows electronic filing of a tax return for free. If no banking information is provided then a check will be issued to the given address instead of any direct deposit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previous stimulus checks can still be claimed through the 2020 tax return as well through claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit according to the IRS \u2014 this is done within the 2020 tax return.
